Sam Leavitt is Doubtful for Sun Devils

Arizona State is in the midst of a rough part of their schedule. The last thing the Sun Devils can afford to have is their starting quarterback sidelined. Well, that is exactly what it looks like is going to happen. It was announced on Friday that Sam Leavitt was being down graded from probable to doubtful.

As far as the injury goes it remains a mystery as to what the particular injury is. Whatever the injury to Leavitt is it goes back to the Baylor game on September 20. The Sun Devils hit a field goal as time expired to beat Baylor 27-24.

Head Coach, Kenny Dillingham, spoke to a local Phoenix radio station and said, “Sam’s been battling something going back to Baylor (on Sept. 20),” Dillingham said, adding that the quarterback had been working hard to rehab. “Bye week was good for him to get kind of back and this week it didn’t feel as good as we wanted to. … If he plays in the game, it’ll be a mini miracle. I’d be shocked.” (Arizona Sports)

With no Sam Leavitt the Sun Devils will look to backup, Jeff Sims, whose only previous start for Arizona State came last season against Cincinnati. Sims is in his sixth collegiate season. He has played at Nebraska and Georgia Tech before making the move to ASU.

In that start last season against Cincinnati Jeff Sims was 12-23, 155 yards and rushed 14 times for 53 yards. Arizona State lost that game 24-14.

“The game plan is not changing. We got a lot of confidence in Jeff,” Dillingham said. “This is his opportunity. I’m excited for him. That’s one thing I can say.” (Arizona Sports)
