Pac-12 Conference Football is Finally Here

The new Pac-12 is finally here. After years of uncertainty, realignment drama, and survival mode, the conference enters 2026 with eight football-playing members: Pac-12 Conference schools Oregon State, Washington State, Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Colorado State, Utah State and Texas State. The league may not carry the same national weight it once did, but it has something equally valuable: opportunity. Every program enters the season believing it has a path to compete for a conference championship and potentially earn national relevance.

The conference’s debut season also arrives with national television exposure through CBS Sports, The CW and USA Network, giving the league a larger platform than many expected when the Pac-12 was left for dead two years ago. Commissioner Teresa Gould called the schedule release “a major milestone” and said the conference is ready to launch “a new era of Pac-12 football.”

Boise State Broncos

If there is a preseason favorite, it is Boise State.

The Broncos enter the new league as the most established football brand and the program most capable of reaching the College Football Playoff conversation. Boise State has consistently won conference championships, produced NFL talent, and maintained national credibility. Several analysts project the Broncos as the league’s top team entering 2026.

Head coach Spencer Danielson has built a culture around toughness and consistency. As Danielson frequently emphasizes, “It’s about earning everything every day.” That mentality fits a program that expects championships, not just bowl appearances.

The pressure will be significant because Boise State is no longer the hunter. In this conference, the Broncos are the hunted.

Prediction: 10-2, Pac-12 Championship contender.

Oregon State Beavers

No team has experienced more turbulence than Oregon State.

The Beavers went from Power Conference member to conference survivor, yet they remain one of the most respected programs in the West. Reser Stadium remains one of the toughest places to play, and Oregon State’s physical identity still resonates throughout college football.

The challenge is rebuilding roster depth after years of transfer portal movement and uncertainty. Analysts see Oregon State as a middle-tier team capable of surprising people if quarterback play stabilizes.

Players have repeatedly spoken about representing a program that refused to quit during realignment. That chip-on-the-shoulder mentality could make Oregon State dangerous. First time head coach, JaMarcus Shephard, has his work cut out for himself and his staff.

Prediction: 7-5 and a bowl appearance.

Washington State Cougars

Like Oregon State, Washington State spent two years fighting for survival.

Now the Cougars finally have a true conference home again. The schedule provides stability, and the fan base can focus on football rather than lawsuits and conference politics.

Washington State’s offense should again be entertaining, but consistency remains the question. The Cougars have enough talent to compete with anyone in the conference, yet they also have enough weaknesses to lose close games.

The Apple Cup will always define part of the season, but the Pac-12 race now matters again.

Prediction: 8-4 and firmly in the title race entering November.

Fresno State Bulldogs

Fresno State has long been one of the toughest programs in the West.

The Bulldogs bring tradition, passionate fans, and a history of upsetting bigger programs. However, recent inconsistency has raised concerns entering their Pac-12 transition.

Fresno State’s ceiling is high because of its recruiting footprint and physical style of play. If the offensive line develops, the Bulldogs could challenge for the upper half of the conference.

Players have consistently emphasized proving they belong on a larger stage. The move to the Pac-12 gives them that opportunity.

Prediction: 8-4 and a dark-horse championship contender.

San Diego State Aztecs

The Aztecs may be the conference’s most intriguing team.

San Diego State has invested heavily in facilities, recruiting and football infrastructure. Snapdragon Stadium gives the program a modern home, and the recruiting advantages in Southern California are obvious.

The defense should once again be one of the league’s best. If the offense becomes more explosive, the Aztecs could challenge Boise State for conference supremacy.

Head coach Sean Lewis has preached playing fast and aggressively, a philosophy that could unlock the program’s next level.

Prediction: 9-3 and legitimate championship contention.

Colorado State Rams

Colorado State may be the league’s sleeper.

The Rams possess strong facilities, a growing recruiting base, and a fan base eager for relevance. While projections place them in the middle of the conference, there is reason to believe they can outperform expectations.

The key will be quarterback play. If the offense takes a step forward, Colorado State can win several toss-up games and become one of the surprise stories of the season.

Prediction: 7-5 and bowl eligible.

Utah State Aggies

Utah State enters the conference with less fanfare than some of the other newcomers, but dismissing the Aggies would be a mistake.

Historically, Utah State has thrived as an underdog. The Aggies often play disciplined football and rarely beat themselves. Several conference games should be decided by one possession, and Utah State is built for those situations.

The roster may not match Boise State’s talent level, but effort and execution keep Utah State competitive.

Prediction: 6-6 and another bowl appearance.

Texas State Bobcats

Texas State is the wild card.

The Bobcats are entering the conference with momentum, improved facilities and access to one of the nation’s richest recruiting territories. The university’s move into the Pac-12 was driven partly by its long-term growth potential.

Head coach G.J. Kinne has energized the program and changed expectations. Texas State may not be ready to win the conference immediately, but the Bobcats are capable of pulling off several upsets.

In many ways, Texas State represents the future of the rebuilt Pac-12: ambitious, growing and eager to prove itself.

Prediction: 6-6 and a competitive conference debut.

Final Verdict

The biggest winner in 2026 may not be a single team—it may be the conference itself.

The rebuilt Pac-12 lacks the blue-blood brands that once defined the league, but it makes up for that with competitive balance. Boise State enters as the favorite, while San Diego State, Washington State, Fresno State and Oregon State all have realistic championship aspirations. Meanwhile, Colorado State, Utah State and Texas State are capable of changing the standings with one upset.

For years, critics predicted the Pac-12 would disappear. Instead, the conference found a second life. The 2026 season won’t simply determine a champion—it will determine whether the new Pac-12 can establish itself as one of the most entertaining and resilient leagues in college football. And based on the talent, parity and passion across these eight programs, the answer looks increasingly likely to be yes.
