Arizona State Pulls the Big Upset on Texas Tech
Last Saturday was a day of upsets in college football. Arizona State decided to join the party. The Sun Devils pulled the big upset of No. 7 Texas Tech by winning 26-22.
Arizona State Pulls the Upset
There were few people that gave Arizona State a chance in this game because of how they looked the previous week against Utah. Texas Tech came into Tempe ranked as a Top-10 team, undefeated, and looking to take control of the Big 12 Conference. The Sun Devils came into the game banged up and coming off a blowout loss at Utah. These were two teams looking for a win for slightly different reasons.
Both teams had questions with their quarterbacks availability. Arizona State quarterback, Sam Leavitt, had been battling an injury that the coaches and trainers were tight lipped about. Sam Leavitt started and finished the game for the Sun Devils. Texas Tech quarterback, Behren Morton, could not start because of a knee injury. Not having Morton put the Red Raiders at a severe disadvantage at Mountain America Stadium.
Sam Leavitt is a gym rat when it comes to playing quarterback. His coaches and his fellow teammates talk about how they almost have to drag him out of the film room or the practice field. Leavitt wants to be great and will do whatever it takes to achieve that greatness.
When there needed to be a play made for the Sun Devils, Sam Leavitt, was the one making that play. Whether it was scrambling for a first down or making a play downfield to Jordyn Tyson. Anytime Sam Leavitt is in uniform the chances of the Sun Devils coming out victorious greatly increase.
Conference Standings
With this win Arizona State has itself exactly where they were last season when they won the Big 12 Conference. The win pushed the Sun Devils to 3-1 in conference play. It left No. 11 BYU and No. 21 Cincinnati as the only undefeated teams left in the Big 12 Conference. However, this win also pushed three teams within a half game of the conference lead. There are six other teams that are a full game back at 2-2.
Arizona State led for most of the game, but took their foot of the gas late in the fourth quarter. Texas Tech took the lead late in the game 22-19. The Sun Devils had to basically go the length of the field to take the lead 26-22. However, nothing is ever easy with this Sun Devil team. The Red Raiders were left with a last ditch Hail Mary pass that was knocked down in the end zone.
Next up
From there, it was a sea of humanity as the Sun Devil fans stormed the field and celebrated the big victory. Next up for ASU are the Houston Cougars at Mountain America Stadium on Saturday at 5pm PST.
