Mountain West Conference

Day 3 Recap: Mountain West Men’s Basketball Tournament

Day 3 of the 2026 Mountain West Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament delivered everything fans expect from March basketball: physical defense, clutch shots, and a pair of intense semifinal battles that ultimately produced a championship showdown between Utah State Aggies men’s basketball and the San Diego State Aztecs men’s basketball.

With an NCAA Tournament automatic bid on the line, both semifinals showcased the conference’s top contenders fighting for a spot in the title game.

Utah State Powers by Nevada

In the first semifinal of the evening, top-seeded Utah State proved why it entered the tournament as the conference’s regular-season champion. The Aggies defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack men’s basketball 79–66, using balanced scoring and strong defense to control the game from the second half onward.

Utah State’s depth was a major factor. Five Aggies scored in double figures, with guard Adlan Elamin leading the way with 15 points. The Aggies also forced 15 Nevada turnovers and capitalized on them throughout the game.

Nevada kept the game competitive early, fueled by the scoring of Vaughn Weems, who led the Wolf Pack with 17 points. However, Nevada struggled with shooting consistency. The team finished the game hitting just 26 percent from three-point range and 41 percent overall, which allowed Utah State to gradually pull away.

Fatigue may have also played a role for Nevada. The Wolf Pack had already played two games in the tournament and were competing for the third time in three days. Utah State, meanwhile, entered the semifinal fresh after receiving a first-round bye as the tournament’s No. 1 seed.

Once Utah State gained control midway through the second half, the Aggies never looked back. Their defense forced rushed shots and turnovers, while their offense continued to find open looks in transition and in the half court.

The victory sent Utah State to the Mountain West championship game for the opportunity to secure the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

San Diego State beats New Mexico in a Thriller

If the first semifinal was about control, the second was about drama.

Second-seeded San Diego State edged the New Mexico Lobos men’s basketball 64–62 in one of the most intense games of the tournament. The contest featured physical defense, multiple momentum swings, and a dramatic final sequence.

The game remained tight from start to finish. Neither team shot particularly well, and the defensive intensity led to a combined 24 turnovers between the two squads.

San Diego State relied heavily on its interior presence. Center Magoon Gwath led the Aztecs with 17 points and six rebounds, controlling the paint and helping SDSU maintain an edge in interior scoring.

New Mexico had several opportunities to take control late in the game. Guard Deyton Albury scored a team-high 20 points and delivered one of the biggest shots of the night when he tied the game with just 25 seconds remaining.

However, San Diego State had the final answer.

With the game tied in the closing seconds, guard BJ Davis hit the game-winning shot with just 2.1 seconds left, giving the Aztecs a 64–62 victory and sending them to the championship game.

The win continued a remarkable run for San Diego State in the Mountain West Tournament. The Aztecs have now reached the conference title game eight times in the last nine seasons and extended their semifinal winning streak to eight games.

For New Mexico, the loss was heartbreaking. The Lobos fought throughout the game but ultimately came up just short in a contest that many viewed as a de facto NCAA Tournament elimination game.

Championship Matchup

With the semifinals complete, the tournament’s final matchup was set: Utah State vs. San Diego State for the Mountain West championship.

Both programs entered the title game with significant stakes. Utah State hoped to validate its regular-season dominance by winning the conference tournament, while San Diego State aimed to continue its remarkable postseason consistency under its program’s established tournament pedigree.

The championship game would determine which team receives the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

For the Mountain West as a whole, the semifinal results highlighted the conference’s competitive balance and defensive identity. Both games featured strong physical play and disciplined defense, hallmarks of Mountain West basketball throughout the season.

Final Thoughts

Day 3 of the Mountain West Tournament delivered exactly what college basketball fans expect during championship week: high stakes, intense defense, and late-game drama.

Utah State’s depth and composure carried the Aggies past Nevada, while San Diego State’s resilience and clutch shot-making helped the Aztecs survive a thrilling battle with New Mexico.

With two of the conference’s most consistent programs remaining, the stage was set for a championship showdown that would determine the Mountain West champion and send one team dancing into March Madness.
