Does Sam Leavitt Stay at Arizona State?
The success that Sam Leavitt has had in his short career at Arizona State has made some people in Tempe a bit nervous. Even with his season ending surgery there are people around Tempe that believe Leavitt may leave for greener pastures in college football. Success can have consequences.
I don’t believe Sam Leavitt goes anywhere.
The season ending surgery that Leavitt is having is the first thing that’ll I point to as to why he isn’t going anywhere. It’s been a nagging type of injury that he’s had since the middle of September. Sun Devil head coach, Kenny Dillingham, spoke about the injury recently.
“So it’s been something that’s been lingering … he’s been battling and fighting,” ASU coach Kenny Dillingham said on on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Friday. “He’s the ultimate competitor. This is like the worst, obviously, news that he wanted to hear because it means he can’t play football. He loves the game of football. He loves this place. So, it’s definitely unfortunate for him.” (Arizona Sports Radio, 98.7fm)
When you are having surgery on your foot/ankle area that can be a tricky injury to come back from. It can also take the most amount of time to feel completely healed. For all of the positives Leavitt brings to the table being injured is not something that another school wants to take on right now.

Coach Dillingham and Sam Leavitt
Secondly, I don’t believe Leavitt leaves because of his relationship with his head coach. If you spend time around the team you know that Kenny Dillingham loves his quarterback. Plus, the quarterback loves his coach. Due to Coach Dillingham’s young age it almost feels like an older brother-younger brother type of relationship. When asked about whether he thinks Sam Leavitt will leave for the NFL or not Coach Dillingham remains unsure.
“ I wish I could answer that question,” Dillingham said. “I’m not even beginning to process what are his next steps. I haven’t even asked him that. I just feel bad for him that he has been dinged up all year and he’s been battling for our football team. It’s unfortunate that it just hasn’t gotten any better.”
The close relationship that Dillingham and Leavitt share is helpful with the thinking that Leavitt will return. The truth is that we just don’t know what will happen, but I do know that Leavitt is grateful for the progression he has shown as a quarterback. For a quarterback to leave a head coach that has made a positive impact on his career is hard to imagine. It’s almost like you can’t imagine Leavitt and Dillingham being together. Some players are made for certain coaches and vice-versa. It’s that way in Tempe.
For now.
