Philadelphia Takes Down Kansas City to Win Super Bowl 59

The Philadelphia Eagles showed everyone on Sunday evening who the best team in the NFL was. In a game that shocked many people the Eagles took down the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl 59.

Kansas City came into the game with the chance to be the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls. That chance at a 3-peat in the Super Bowl went out the door fairly quickly. The Eagles came into the game with a squad that had more than a punchers chance to win the biggest football game of the year.

This punchers chance that the many thought the Eagles had to win turned into complete and total dominance of the Chiefs in New Orleans. The 40-22 final score was a bit unfair to an Eagles defense that shut down Patrick Mahomes most of the game until a couple of trash time touchdowns made the score a slightly more respectable. Kansas City’s defense was trying to keep the game respectable, but the amount of time the Chief’s defense spent out on the field finally caught up with them. The Chief’s defense was run over by a Philly offense that showed how potent they could be on the biggest stage in sports.

When you take a look at the statistics for the game and had no clue about the final score you may think the Chiefs fared well in Super Bowl 59. The Eagles were 3-12 on third down, the Chiefs held Saquon Barkley to a paltry 57 yards on 25 carries, failed to convert the only 4th down play they had, turned the ball over in the red zone, and actually averaged 5.1 yards fewer per play than the Chiefs. With all that being true, the Chiefs were blow out in a way that we have not seen in a few years.

Kansas City chose the wrong time to possibly have their worst game since 2019 in a divisional game with Houston. On top of that, it was also the worst time for All-Pro Quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, to have what will probably be considered his worst big game as a professional football player. The Chiefs were down 34-0 in the third quarter and Mahomes looked about as flustered as anybody as ever seen him on a football field. Offensively, the Chiefs could not get anything going to make this Super Bowl a competitive game. To drive home this point, Mahomes was 6-14, 33 yards, and two interceptions in the first half of this game. I’ve never seen stats like that with Mahomes in the first half a game in his whole college or pro career. The offensive line could not protect Patrick Mahomes at all. Mahomes was running for his safety almost from the first play for the Chiefs and it just got worse as the game progressed. Patrick Mahomes also had a passer rating of 10.9 which was third worst of any quarterback in the NFL this season.

It was that bad for the Chiefs.

It didn’t get any better in the second half for Kansas City and Mahomes. Even with late game scoring drives Mahomes finished with 11.4 passer rating which was his second worst rating of his career. At the end of the day, you have to give credit where credit is due and that is with the Philadelphia Eagles defense. The Eagles defensive line showed that they could dominate without blitzing. Philadelphia got pressure on Mahomes with just their four down defensive linemen. Patrick Mahomes dropped back 42 times and never faced an all out blitz from the Eagles. It was a master class being dominant on defense. Eagles defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, who will correctly take a ton of the credit for his defense’s solid play, but let’s make sure you understand that it was the front seven on that Eagle defense that ground the Chiefs offense into fine sand.

Part of the process of shutting down the Chiefs offense came with the Eagles ability to cut off Mahomes ability to make plays with his legs. If you pay attention to the NFL and the Chiefs you know that there a few times a game that Patrick Mahomes makes a play with his legs. Mahomes gets outside of containment for a play or two and makes a play to get a first down, a completion to a receiver or runs the ball in for a touchdown. It’s not a question of “if”. It’s a question of “when” Mahomes makes this type of play. It didn’t happen on Sunday evening.

Another reason you didn’t see that game changing type of play from Patrick Mahomes was due to the fact that the Eagles edge rushers were winning at their position all game long. Usually, Mahomes gets outside of the offensive line and escapes going up the sideline. On Sunday, the pass rushers for the Eagles forced the Chiefs quarterback to step up into the pocket and try to escape pressure up the middle. The Eagles linebackers were sitting there in the middle of the field waiting with open arms to take down Mahomes. This type of play from Eagles defense was a constant throughout the whole game.

In the end, the Philadelphia Eagles were by no means intimidated by the two-time defending champs from Kansas City. Philadelphia has 9-10 players that are just what I like to call “dudes”. These dudes are difference makers and to have that many on your team almost seems unfair. However, it is, what it is. There are teams in all sports that seem to have an overabundance of quality players. The Eagles do and the best thing about this team for its fans is that they have a culture in place to develop these players. If I am a fan of another team in the NFC, more specifically, the NFC East, you have a major problem with these Eagles. I invite people to take a look at the last five drafts for the Eagles. Scan through who the Eagles have drafted and developed in that time period. It’s scary.

Fly Eagles Fly.
